FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the benefits of using hardwood floors versus other flooring types?

Hardwood flooring has many environmental benefits. Wood floors improve air quality making it better. They don't harbor allergens or pesticides. They are minimal on dust and mold. Hardwood flooring has the sustainability to last hundreds of years meaning the need to replace it significantly drops. Wood flooring is strong, durable, low maintenance, and cost effective.

What are the differences between floor finishes?

While there are a variety of floor finishes available to the consumer it is very important to understand the differences. Water-based finishes give a clear natural look and are milky in color. If you are planning to keep your floor in it's natural state then a water-based finish would be the route to go. Water-based finish doesn't tend to have as strong a smell due to low VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds). These finishes also dry much quicker than an oil-based finish.

Oil-based finishes are amber in color, sturdy, and hard-wearing. It's color is darker and will progress to becoming more darker over time. Oil-based requires fewer coats, but the dry time isn't as quick as water-based. Since VOC's are higher than water based finish. the odor is typically much stronger.

Rather than just putting a film over the top layer of the hardwood, natural oil finishes infiltrate wood deeper than other traditional finishes used. Natural oil finishes penetrate deeper into wood fiber; ultimately creating a long-lasting, durable finish.

Can I stay in my house while my floors are being refinished?

Although in some cases we do make exceptions, but, in most cases it is better for your project and health if the home is vacant during the refinishing process.

How long does the process of hardwood floor refinishing typically take?

While it typically depends on how what services you are having done and how large the project is, at minimum most hardwood floor refinishing projects take 3 approximately days. However, if you are using products that only need one coat such as a natural oil finish like Rubio Monocoat, the time can be less if the square footage is smaller. Unfortunately, most jobs take a week to complete. But when booking your service with us we will let you know a general completion date.

Why is the moisture level in my home important?

In your home, your moisture level is very important. Prior to your consultation, we will do a moisture reading to make sure your home has an appropriate moisture-reading.It's important that new wood flooring be properly acclimated with your home before being installed. When you install wood flooring or have wood flooring in your home, the humidity level general needs to be between 30% to 50%. If the wood in your home ends up increasing or decreasing too much moisture, problems can arise.

Wood that is gaining too much moisture can end up cupping. Cupping happens across the width of a floor board. The reason cupping occurs is always because of a moisture imbalance through the thickness of the wood.

Wood that is dropping in moisture can end up gapping. Gaps happen between floor boards. Keeping the environment of the house between 60 degrees and 80 degrees can reduce the occurrence of these issues happening along with the humidity between 30 to 50
